  • The problem of climate change has been widely acknowledged, but the response to it has been lacking. There are many reasons for this, including a sense of hopelessness and helplessness in the face of a seemingly insurmountable problem. But there is another way to look at climate change, and that is as an opportunity for humanity to come together and use our collective intelligence to find solutions. Collective intelligence (CI) is defined as “a form of social capital in which groups or networks solve problems together that they could not have solved alone” (Bonabeau, 2009). It has been used successfully in fields such as business, technology, and medicine, and there is no reason why it cannot also be applied to the challenge of climate change. There are already some examples of CI being used in relation to climate change. The Climate Collaboratorium was set up by MIT professor John Sterman “to harness the power of online collaboration among experts from around the world to generate insights into what policies would be most effective in combating global warming” (Sterman & Bosetti 2007). Another example is We Are Here To Stay , an initiative launched by Greenpeace USA which uses AI-powered chatbots “to connect people who want take action on behalf issues like stopping oil drilling with others who can help them do just that” (Greenpeace USA n.d.). But if we are going to use CI effectively againstclimate change we need move beyond isolated initiativesand start thinking about how make best useof this powerful tool on a global scale . This means creating opportunities for CI within existing institutions suchas governments , businesses , NGOs , universitiesand so on . It also means looking at waysin which ordinary citizens can get involved inthe process through things like citizen scienceprojects . And finally it requires us toraise awareness about what Collective Intelligenceis and how it can be usedClimate Change . Only thenwill we stand any chanceof using our collective brainpowerto create a more resilient futurefor all life on Earth .
